The Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad (LS&M) was orgainized in 1863 by financier Jay Cooke. Completed in 1870, with the first passenger trains in September of that year, it was the first line between the Twin Cities and Duluth, Minnesota.[1]

When the Panic of 1873 ensued, the LS&M reorganized in 1877 as the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad which was later absorbed into the Northern Pacific.[2]

Excursion Service

In 1981 the volunteer Lake Superior Transportation Club began passenger excursion service along the St. Louis River using much of the historic LS&M right-of-way.[3]
