Formed with the goal of connecting the Great Lakes to the Pacific, the Northern Pacific Railway Company was chartered by Congress on July 2, 1864. The company was first headquartered in Brainerd, Minnesota, but later moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Northern Pacific merged with the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Great Northern and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway on March 2, 1970, to form the Burlington Northern Railroad. (BNSF Web site)
