Cab 605 on southbound Northstar train to Target Field

Northstar Commuter Rail is Minnesota's first commuter rail line and provides services from downtown Minneapolis to Big Lake. It operates on track owned by BNSF Railway.

Like many commuter trains, the train operates in a push/pull. A locomotive is on one end but when the train operates in reverse the engineer is in the opposite end in a special cab car. The cab car is not only a coach car, but also contains controls allowing the engineer to control the train from the rear. There are also horns on top of the cab car distinguishing it from regular coaches.

The fleet consists of:

  • 6 Motive Power (MP36-3C) engines numbered 12, 501-505
  • 12 Bombardier BiLevel Coaches numbered 701-712
  • 6 Bombardier BiLevel Cab Cars numbered 601-606

As detailed in the the list above, the locomotives (with the exception of #12) are numbered in the 500s, coaches in the 700s, and cab cars in the 600s.
